Kanser hastalarının tıbbi tedaviden en iyi faydayı elde etmelerinde ve hastalık sürecinde yaşanan fiziksel, psikososyal ve ekonomik sorunların azaltılmasında sosyal destek önemli bir rol oynar. Kanser hastalarının sosyal desteğe ihtiyaç duydukları konuların belirlenmesi, bu alanda önemli roller üstlenen sosyal hizmet uzmanı (SHU), psikolog, hemşire ve hekimlerin hazırlayacağı psikososyal müdahaleler için önemli ipuçlarının elde edilmesini sağlayabilir. Aşağıdaki çalışmada, kanser hastalarının tanı öncesi, tanı, nüks, terminal ve ölüm döneminde gösterdiği tepkiler, kanser hastalarının yaşam kalitelerinde çok önemli bir yer tutan sosyal destek olgusu, sosyal desteğin boyutları, kaynak ve fonksiyonları ve hastalıkla baş etmede SHU’nın ne gibi çalışmalar yapabileceği tartışılmaktadır.
Social support has an important role in providing the best treatment for cancer patients and decreasing the physical, psychosocial and economic problems during treatment process. Determination of the areas in which cancer patients need social support can provide important clues for psychosocial interventions that social workers, psychologists, nurses and physicians will handle. In this study; the reactions of patients before diagnosis, during diagnosis, in recurrence, in the terminal and death periods; the social support concept that is important for the life quality of cancer patients; dimensions, resources and functions of social support; and the types of work that types of work that could be done by social workers in coping with disease have been discussed.
